There are several ways that registered members of LiveModern can customize how they interact with the website.

Once you have registered as a member of LiveModern, you have the ability to change a few things.

After registering, if you look at the bar running across the upper portion of the page, just below the tabs (welcome, forums, members...), you will see that the right side of it now contains a number of links. The first link is your Full Name: clicking on it takes you to your own home page (which you can edit).

But before we do that, look at the navigation line just underneath your personal bar (assuming you are using a standards-compliant browser). This navigation line tells you exactly where you are on the LiveModern website at all times (as does the "navigation" box in the lower left of your LiveModern screen). There you will see a subtle change: a small icon just to the left of the "you are here:" navigation line.

This tiny button (sorry, we did not have a say in this user interface decision) is one of the most powerful reasons to register on the LiveModern website. By clicking on it, you can mark any page on the LiveModern website as a "favorite"—a place that you might want to frequently visit. As soon as you mark a page as a favorite, by clicking on this tiny button when you are logged into your account, it will appear as a link in a "my favorites" box that appears in the upper left hand corner of your LiveModern screen. Add as many favorites as you like, and organize them by clicking on the Organize Favorites button at the bottom of the "my favorites" box. As you will soon see, it's kind of like a bookmark function for this website, which can be come quite handy as the depth of the website content increases.

OK, back to the rest of the bar, specifically, to the right of the "you are here" contents. The third link is to "my preferences". Click this link, and a page will open that shows all of the other customization options available to you.

These preferences allow you to customize the way the site looks to you and the way you interact with it, but they don't change any site content. You can edit them at any time.

As with any form in the LiveModern website, items with a red square next to them are required, which means you must fill them in for the form to submit correctly. There are several items here that you can change to your liking:

  • Full Name—You entered your real full name when you first registered your membership on LiveModern. Make sure it is correct here.
  • Email—You entered your email address when you first registered. You can change your email address here. Make sure that it is an address that you regularly check as we will use this address to contact you about any updates to LiveModern. Note that this field is required.
  • Listed Status—You can choose your listed status. If you are listed, you will show up in the membership list. If you are unlisted, you will not, but your member folder will still, by default, show up in the folder listings (you can change this through other means, explained later). The default is to be listed: if you want to be unlisted on LiveModern, change your preference now.
  • Form Help—Turning Form Help on provides Form Help pop-ups which appear next to input fields when your mouse pointer is placed over the field. Turning Form Help off hides them. The default is to have Form Help on. We recommend leaving it on until you are familiar with LiveModern.
  • Display Names—This option enables you to change the name of an actual document when you create it (instead of leaving it to the website to create a name for the document for you). The name is used in the URL of the document. The default is to turn this feature off. We recommend that you leave it that way.
  • Portrait—You can choose to upload an image to use as your portrait. This image will be what people see when they search for you in the member list (otherwise, a generic sillouette will be displayed for your portrait). When choosing your image, keep in mind that it will be shown at a very small in size (only 75 pixels wide and 100 pixels high).

When you are finished making your selections, click the "Save" to make them active.
