Goodbye Picasso by David Douglas Duncan • From $19.95 • There are a half dozen picture books that marked by childhood and this is the top of the list. A visual history published in 1974 of Picasso during the time that he lived at Villa Californie with his last wife, Jacqueline Roque , before he died (in 1973), it is a moving account of the last years of a special life. Picasso was never one of my favorites, but the images in this book, by DDD, are heartfelt and incredibly expressive. It all made sense to me here for the first time. The best part is DDD's explanation of finding a portrait by Picasso and ruining it by trying to blow dust off (the charcoal wasn't fixed), only to be told, "It's time for lunch." READ MORE »
