A solar eclipse occurs when the moon crosses between Earth and the sun, blocking out the view of the sun. June 8, 1918 — nearly a century ago — was the last time the US was witness to such phenomena. In fact, it is such rare occurrence that hotels in and around cities across the eclipse's path, cities like Casper, Wyoming, Madras, Oregon, and Nashville, Tennessee, have long been sold out in anticipation of the event — in some cases for years.
