This month, Shedworking's Calm Editor Heather Bestel says ditch the clutter and the stress will disappear... Shedworking means being clever with the space you have. Introduce clutter and things start to get stressful. Trying to find a piece of paper you’ve misplaced or not having desk space to work on because it’s covered in papers, is stressful. Take advantage of the changing season and have a good declutter. We find Spring cleaning a useful concept, why not Autumn organising? Here are my top tips to make shedworking even more successful. Step 1 - Make a list of everything you need in your shed office. Then notice all the things you actually have in your shed. The goal is to keep what you need and re-house what you don’t. Step 2 - Create 3 piles: one for stuff you need, one for stuff you need to get rid of and one for stuff that you want to keep, but not in your shed. Step 3 - Take out everything that shouldn’t be in there and you’ll see an instant difference. And you will now have less stuff to organise. Start with your desktop and the floor. The room will seem much more organised when these areas are clear. Step 4 - Package anything you want to keep, but don't want in your office. Take these things to another location as soon as you can. This allows you to see how much space you have left in the office. Step 5 - Allocate some time to organise the things you are keeping. Use simple straightforward systems for all your paperwork. Find a home for financial papers you will have to keep for a long time but don’t need to be in your office. Keep things you use every day within arms reach. Practise a clear desk at the end of every working day and you will keep shedworking stress to a minimum. "I'm looking for housing that is affordable, and modern. I know there must be innovative, well-designed housing out there. I just can't seem to find it!" —Tracey R., from the Dwell discussion board
