Help With DIY Wainscoting Project? Good Questions

Q: I've been researching different styles of wainscoting for our dining room and I tend to like a nice, clean, simple, Craftsman look to be painted white. I want to attempt to do this project on my ow




 

 

063011-goodquestions.jpgQ: I've been researching different styles of wainscoting for our dining room and I tend to like a nice, clean, simple, Craftsman look to be painted white. I want to attempt to do this project on my own but can't seem to find a good DIY tutorial online anywhere! Can I leave the base layer of the wainscoting as dry wall (painted of course) and just add the vertical wood stiles over it or does the base layer need to be a wood material as well? What type of wood is best for this application and what thickness? Is it best to paint the wainscoting bright white or an off white and what type of finish?
