September 01–January 08 Humlebæk, Denmark Vija Celmins, born in 1938 in Riga, Latvia and is now based in New York, is the third artist featured in the Louisiana series "On Paper." Work on paper can be a core area for an artist, and this is particularly true of Vija Celmins. With an extremely realistic technique the artist reorganizes and imitates black-and-white photographs, usually executed in grisaille: grey shades forming patterns of light and shadow. Her magical gaze from the small paper surface out into the sea of stars in the universe demonstrates to the full what the small format can achieve: anything from the smallest to the largest. In 2014, a major retrospective exhibition of the artist’s work will be shown at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
