The city of Porto, Portugal was the location of a recent art installation that paid tribute to two of its emblematic architectural elements: the spiral staircase and the balcony, ubiquitous features of the cityscape. Conceived by local architectural firm LIKEarchitects, the installation, named Tripod, connected 3 winding steel staircases to a pair of triangular platforms, its entire joyful purple-hued form supported by a concrete base.

Located in Porto’s Largos dos São Domingos town square, Tripod was designed as “a simultaneously intimate and exposed space, that allows visitors to observe the city while being observed by the other citizens,” according to the architects, who were inspired by the “famous stairs, like the entrance at Casa da Música or the staircase at Livraria Lello & Irmão, which has inspired Harry Potter books,” of Portugal’s second largest city.

Not surprisingly, children immediately claimed the staircase-to-nowhere as their personal playground during its month-long stay, but other expressions of ‘spontaneous appropriation’ included music concerts, performance art pieces, and al fresco dining.
