I recently stumbled onto the site of Jacques Dupuis and was completely stoked to get a little education on this man. The google translation doesn’t read to smooth but it sounds like Jacques had his own way of thinking. I love the style of his projects and his dedication to black and white. There is a load of great history and images on his site so make sure to check it out.

Jacques Dupuis

Jacques Dupuis was trained before the war, at the Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Architecture de la Cambre, in Brussels, under the direction of the modernist architect Victor Bourgeois. De 1940 à 1951, il travaille en association étroite avec son ami intime Roger BASTIN, un autre grand format de l’architecture belge. From 1940 to 1951 he worked in close association with his close friend Roger Bastin, another large Belgian architecture. ”

Anarchist temperament and provocative, his refusal to vertical construction, industrialization of the habitat are quickly index. Increasingly, in the 50’s and 60’s, he turned to a select clientele, but limited, that the plebiscite (from 1949 to Madeleine Everaert home in Uccle): engineers, doctors, artists, teachers All members of a middle class on the rise, often young and sensitive to contemporary art, plus some industrial lawyers and bosses Text Via

His obsession with whiteness, the tension between white and black in its buildings, the introduction of “hyphenation” in the streets ugly and satisfied, all this refers to his conviction, his revolt. The architecture can help change lives. His travels began in Japan and the Scandinavian countries have marked its design: Swedish Gunnar Asplund and Alvar Aalto Finnish had managed the synthesis between modernity and tradition. In modern architecture, stripped of its stiffness, they integrated so romantic elements of vernacular and regional materials. Their organic approach led them to integrate the building into the landscape, to establish a dialogue between inside and outside, open architecture and nature. In addition, leaving the mold of rectangular shape, they have broken the traditional plan of the house, introduce the curve, the open angle. This program, DUPUIS the radical in its homes. It deconstructs the habitat required by or used by the market, in form and principle than divides cultural, social, historical. He refuses alignment imposed by the urban building routine, he introduced into the landscape, what he calls a “break” accentuated the white facades (R. Dumont house at Braine-le-Comte, 1965) .
