Dubai-born designer Khalid Shafar looked to his native landscape and its mundane traditions for his Palm Coat Rack. Recalling childhood memories of date palms tree trunks being used to hang clothing and other items, Shafar noted, “What always struck me was that they never used the fronds, but the body. The use of the trunk as functional item inspired my Palm Coat Stand.” By employing a vertical arrangement of pine wood pegs, Shafar arrived at a modern sculptural column, an abstraction that still manages to offer a convincing approximation of a date palm’s segmented bark pattern.
