Mell Lawrence Architects’ project The Cotillion Pavilion recently won a 2012 Texas Society of Architects Design Award. Commissioned by the Dallas Parks Department, it was designed to replace a 1960s-era pavilion, and the new structure shades a sunny spot between two groups of trees in a lovely place to gather in a park. Made of steel, the design mimics the surrounding hierarchy of trees, and the pavilion itself sort of mimics the pattern of shade, only architectural. Concrete benches define the outdoor room, sometimes stretching under the shade of the trees. The project was designed by Mell Lawrence and Elizabeth Baird. What do you think about this lovely outdoor space? Would you wanna sit under it and enjoy the outdoors?
