PH0413001Country houses, by definition, are expected to be a safe distance from the bustle of urban life—but not, typically, in another hemisphere altogether. The owner of this pristine, if modest, house on a remote stretch of property outside Sydney, Australia, spends most of his time in Europe, but was seduced enough by a visit to this particular spot in rural Australia to commission, long-distance, “a simple and modest building,  not unlike a shed, somewhere he could use as a retreat to listen to music, read books and enjoy his art”. Working with a childhood friend who also happened to be an Australian native and an architect, the owner was able to realize his admirable ambition in a mere 12 weeks, via a simple pair of cubes composed of metal and glass, which accommodate a living room, bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. Hidden storage, spartan (albeit beautifully edited) furnishings, art, and bucolic views converge to form a portrait of country living to which even the most ardent urbanite may be tempted to surrender.
