Although there is no “Ex” involved, one of the coolest and most bizarre presents I got this year was this fun and surreal The Ex 5-Piece Knife Set designed by Raffaele Iannello. Knowing my love of the strange and unusual and my wish for some new kitchen knives my In-Laws got me this unique 5 piece kitchen knife block for the holidays.

So far this bright red figure standing over 14.5 inches tall and pierced throughout with 5 stainless steel knives has never failed to get a laugh from my guests. the animated angle that is stands at looks like it is has been suddenly pierced by every knife at once and is frozen at that moment just before it falls. It looks outstanding on my counter top and it makes me smile every time I use it.

The figure on The Ex 5-Piece Knife Set is rounded and cartoonish enough to keep it from being morbid and it is molded out of thick plastic. It seemed like it might be a bit flimsy at first but the wide base keeps it pretty stable and solid. For those with kids or pets that are worried that it might be a little dangerous, keep in mind that there are clear plastic casings that cover the sharp part of the knives although the image above doesn’t show them.

The real shocker for me was the quality of the knives, this is not a novelty set with cheapo knives for effect only.  The set includes an 8″ bread knife, an 8″ carver, a 5″ utility knife, and a 3-1/2″ parer that are made from heavy-gauge stainless steel and seem sharp enough. I am not sure how they will hold up but I guess only time will tell.

This set is really more for the fun and whimsy anyway. Originally marketed as Voodoo Knives the marketing seems to have shifted to bitter ex-wives but this knife is great for people who like modern design, kitsch, fans of horror or  anyone with a sense of humor.

The Ex 5-Piece Knife Set by Raffaele Iannello  will definitely by a part of my kitchens wacky modern decor for some time.
