Dutch designer, Tord Boontje, the modern lighting and furniture designer best known for his cascading Garland lamps, has designed a series of whimsical Christmas stamps for PostNL, Holland’s national postal company, which prominently features images of animals. The London-based Boontje, whose work is characterized by layered material applications, and densely packed floral illustrations, deliberately stays clear of traditional Christmas motifs, opting instead for a wintery suite of 10 charming illustrations, each bucolic, nature-laden scene rendered in a color scheme of blue, red, black, and white.

Communion is the overriding theme of Boontje’s stamp designs, most of which show interaction between humans and animals, specifically animals that rarely figure into Christmas iconography. “I intentionally opted for a few animals that aren’t usually associated with December,” explains the designer, for whom symbolism trounced cliche. “For example a swallow…spend their winters in Africa. It’s symbolic and in this way the stamps also refer to those who can’t be here during the festive season.” Still, more conventionally seasonal creatures—reindeer, polar bears—are given their fair share of time on Boontje’s PostNL stamp series, and that winter staple, the snowflake, finds its way into each of the 10 illustrations.

Tord Boontje’s preoccupation with flora and fauna, illustrated in the stamps and animations here, remains intrinsic to his creative output. Now a professor at London’s Royal College of Art, the Dutch designer, for all his cerebral credentials, has rarely shied away from overt embellishments. His best selling Garland pendant light, boasting a shade of laser-cut metal leaves and flowers—and which resides in the permanent collections of both MOMA and the V&A—is unabashedly ornamental, easily doubling as holiday decoration.

Like his product designs, Boontje’s December Stamps for Dutch postal service PostalNL express the designer’s penchant for layered story-telling and wistful imagery. “I wanted to show how important it is to be together in December or to think of one another during this time.” December Stamps are available in the Netherlands throughout the month of December.
