While brainstorming Mother’s Day ideas, we went searching for some possible flowers to send, because what girl doesn’t love to receive some flowers? Excuse us if this sounds a bit pretentious, but all the  flower arrangements we came across just seemed so…dated. Thankfully there’s a new trend in flower arranging that we’ve discovered just in time: Ikebana.

From the Austin Ikebana website: “Ikebana (“arranged flower”) is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. Unlike traditional western flower arrangement, which focuses almost exclusively on the flower blossoms and their colors, Ikebana designers consider the entire flower—the bloom, stems, and leaves—when creating arrangements. The rules that govern traditional Ikebana emphasize shape, line, form, color, and meaning. The art represents a marriage of nature and humanity: Ikebana uses the designer’s hand to integrate raw pieces of the natural world into an arrangement that becomes nature, distilled and presented for the human eye.”

Like those favorite string gardens we’ve been spotting and talking about, there’s something so lovely, simple and modern about these arrangements that we love so dearly. If you’re in Austin, definitely check out Austin Ikebana. Try googling “Ikebana” to see if there’s someone creating this lovely art where you are!
