Remember those funky mod fireplaces from the 50′s and 60s that looked like some cool rounded pod-like shape made completely out of metal and suspended from the ceiling by a narrow chimney pipe. They were not so much for heating an entire house so much as they were designed to create a hip and cozy atmosphere. They always make me want to put on a sweater and drink a snifter of brandy while reading a book and petting my dachshund. You just don’t see many of those funky modern fireplaces anymore do you? I think that this is probably more because of local fire codes and environmental concerns that anything else.
Well you can capture some of that swinging 60′s atmosphere for your modern home the hanging Aeris Hanging Fireplace from Cocoon Fires. This compact, carbon steel cocoon shaped fireplace hangs from an adjustable pole mounted to a bracket on your ceiling. The squat fire chamber measures about 24″ in diameter and is about 15″ at its tallest point. It has a wide oval-shaped opening that has a futuristic mid-century style that can only be described as “shagadelic”.
In many ways this fireplace is pretty futuristic. The swanky Aeris Hanging Fireplace doesn’t have a chimney because this environmentally friendly fireplace doesn’t burn wood. Inside it contains a special combustion chamber that uses a fuel called Denatured Ethanol to create fire. This is a renewable, clean burning liquid fuel that doesn’t smoke and has no harmful emissions when burned. The combustion chamber hold 1.5 liters of fuel, enough to burn for about 6 hours. As the body of the fireplace warms, it keeps the room around it cozy and delivers beautiful ambient heat that is about the same as what a small electric heater produces.
The Aeris Hanging Fireplace comes in a matte black finish and there is a really cool mirror finish, stainless steel version that looks even more high-tech and industrial. They are suspended from the ceiling by a bracket made from marine grade stainless steel and an adjustable hanging pole with 6 height positions. The longest position is 52″ long (72″ long including the cocoon fireplace). Both extension poles and additional brackets are available for flat or sloped roof ceilings. This makes it really to move from room to room as you need it (but not while it’s lit, lets not be careless). One other cool feature is the ability to rotate the fireplace 360 degrees to create a number of viewing positions.
The Aeris Hanging Fireplace is the perfect way to add some 60′s mod style to your Feng Shui without all the negative effects that a standard fireplace has. The price of course varies with the options you choose but the Black Aeris runs around $2,990.00 and the Stainless Steel Aeris around $3,990.00 after a substantial discount through Wayfair.com.
