by Kelsey Keith Design competitions are a dime a dozen, but rarely involve a diocese. Which is why we're so fascinated by Design a Church Chair!, whose winners were announced last week by the Bishop of London at St John's Church in Hyde Park. The judging panel—comprising a bishop, the chair of the UK's Church Building Council, the vicar of St John's, designer John Makepeace, and architectural illustrator Matthew Rice—turned to designers in revamping its seating, while championing versatility, affordability, and durability. Imagine: a Gothic chapel built in 1832, whose ruling body invites contemporary designers to outfit its interiors.
