A0011793Giving a gracious old Italian home a memorable modernist extension is no easy task, but the Treviso, Italy architectural practice, Zanon Architetti Associati, had no problem with it, thank you. The owners’ desire to expand their country home’s living space without fracturing the esthetic integrity of the original structure was realized with the extension of a glass and COR-TEN steel cube that manages to give the house a dramatic, yet seamless, 21st Century update.

The weathered steel echoes the burnished beauty of the house’s richly hued original details, while floor-to-ceiling glass offers a brand new vantage point for the home’s bucolic setting. The architects explain: “The new volume talks with the natural landscape through the wide windows. From outside, the glass volume reflects the surrounding nature becoming part of it; from inside, the windows get invisible giving the impression of being outdoor; the living room becomes one whole space with the countryside.”
