Normal Basalt4Proving that nothing may be more beautiful or dramatic than basic black, French design agency Normal Studio has created a suite of 5 tables, hand crafted from a single trunk of an oak tree. A collaboration with the design gallery Ymer & Malta, Normal Studio’s Basalt tables were fashioned from heartwood, the hardest, oldest wood at the core of a trunk, typically darker in color than its surrounding, younger wood. Aiming to echo the fossil-like characteristics of non-living heartwood, the designers have assembled each table from chunks of heartwood pieces, and then manually burnt the wood’s surface to arrive at a jet-black mineralized finish. The result of all this hard work is, not surprisingly, something closer to art than craft, more sculpture than furniture—and a striking statement, by any definition.Normal Basalt5Normal Basalt3Normal Basalt2
