Like many people, my taste in modern furniture design often far outruns my actual furniture budget. My problem is that I have a love for the classics of modern furniture. I love those iconic designs like the ball chair, the Womb Lounge Chair and in this case the Swan Chair designed by Arne Jacobson.
Jacobson was a was a Danish architect and designer who was a firm believer in Functionalism both in architecture and in furniture design. Although this belief puts function before aesthetics, Jacobson managed to design some of the most interesting and aesthetically pleasing furniture in modern design including the Egg Chair, the Ant Chair and the Series 7 Chairs.
The Swan Chair was designed in 1958 for the lobby and lounge areas of the Royal Hotel hotel in Copenhagen and was the state of the art furniture construction for its time. It bears some resemblance to his molded plywood chairs with some inspiration thrown in by the Saarinen Womb Chair as well. The Swan Chair, as well as the Swan Sofa are still in production today by Fritz Hansen, their original manufacturer.
This is where my problem begins, you see, an authentic Swan Chair manufactured by Fritz Hansen can run as much as $3,600.00. This is the point at which my taste clashes with my budget so my eye inevitably roams to the many reproduction Swan Chairs available on the market. There are many available for a very low price but the quality of many of these “knock offs” is iffy at best. Many are made in China using cheap plastic, low quality padding and poor workmanship.
However, there are a few high quality reproductions available out there like the Swan Chair from Manhattan Home Design that is made with a sturdy cast aluminium base, a reinforced fiberglass inner frame and good quality high density foam cushioning. Although they offer any leather upholstered models the have fabric available in classic red and black, a bright modern orange, light blue and a vibrant purple. Each one costs around $550.00, a much more manageable price than over $3000.
Another great source for the Jacobson Swan Chair is from Kardiel, this manufacturer of modern furniture reproductions takes great care in choosing their materials and pays special attention to the craftsmanship to lovingly reproduce this classic in modern furniture design. Kardiel has many styles of fabric and leather upholstered Swan Chairs in a range of colors. Choose from Bouclé Cashmere wool in bright colors like apple green and yellow or a more traditional tweed or houndstooth twill for an outrageously low $449.00. They also feature beautiful 100% Italian Aniline Leather for only $549.00. An outstanding price for the quality of this piece.
So if you want to add this mid-century icon to your home decor but don’t have the budget for the original, there are a few high quality alternatives available with quality that is up to your standards. Check out both Manhattan Home Design and Kardiel for their other great quality reproductions of classic modern furniture.
