Gift giving season arrives each year with the promise of securing that pitch-perfect suite of holiday presents—but, alas, brings with it the challenge of sourcing fittingly imaginative wrapping paper. Modernists and graphic designers, loathe to surrender to red, green, and kitsch, long ago began searching for creative alternatives, opting for everything from old newspapers and glossy magazine pages to plain brown paper and DIY rubber-stamped sheets of tissue. We’ve been admirers of Guildery for a while, the California-based company that specializes in original textile patterns created by a talented roster of artists and designers—and are happy to see the company has added modern gift wrapping to its product offerings, each pattern based on an existing textile motif.

Hey Guildery Gift Wrap

Hey, gift wrapping paper pattern by California design studio, Guildery

Sold in 5-pack 20×29-inch sheets, modern wrapping paper by Guildery is premium gift wrapping comprised of FSC certified, acid free paper, and features original designs created for home textiles. Hey is part of the Foothill collection of mix-and-match fabrics created by Orlando Soria, a Los Angeles based interior designer whose motifs include stripes, words, and emoticons. Ideal gift wrapping for the typography obsessed, wordsmith, or youngster, this is wrapping paper for any occasion, though we absolutely see the gold-hued Hey wrapped in bows and beckoning from under a Christmas tree.

Playdough Guildery Gift Wrap

Wrapping paper in the pattern, Playdough, by California-based Guildery

New Jersey designer Tammie Bennet mines “children’s art, trail runs and vintage candy shops,” among other sources, for her creative inspiration—evidenced in Playdough, a pattern that’s a part of her Playtime suite of colorful graphic motifs. Bennet calls it a collection of ‘happy vibes,’ and while we’re in full agreement, we think there’s also a distinct Mid Century vibe that should resonate nicely with retro design enthusiasts.

Curly Loops Guildery Gift Wrap

Curly Loops gift wrapping paper pattern by Guildery

Part of the Arabesque collection of “swirling vines and lines,” Curly Loops is a design by Colorado-based artist Robbin Rawlings, whose delicate watercolor patterns have been translated into a suite of  fabrics for furniture, drapes, and linens. Applying this painterly pattern, in all its rose and crimson hues, to gift wrapping was a pretty smart idea, we think—an anything-but-loopy choice for most any occasion, but especially perfect for Christmas or Valentine’s Day.
