Shipping container homes have been gaining popularity over the last few years. Two reasons for this are lower constructions costs (as compared to standard construction methods) and environmentally-conscious purposes (when recycled containers are used.) Architect Chris Bitner designed an 800 sq ft home from three recycled shipping containers for a San Diego County couple - the total construction costs were $160,000! The various knicks, dents and rust of the recycled containers lend a rustic feeling to the modern home design. The home is full of modern furniture and includes a space-conscious open kitchen full of energy-efficient appliances. The small kitchen island is lit by a series of pendant lights . A combination of practical under-cabinet lights and modern track lighting are used to light the rest of the area. A close-to-ceiling fixture provides even more ambient light . LED lighting would be the perfect choice for this environmentally-conscious home. LED lights are energy efficient and have a life of 50,000 hours! The dining area next to the kitchen features a bar-height table and casual kitchen barstools ,  The dining area is alongside a garage door that can be raised to extend the living space outside, perfect for the balmy, temperate climate in Sand Diego County. The couple hopes to someday build a larger shipping container home and make their current home into a guest house. Image source: Dwell

"I'm looking for housing that is affordable, and modern. I know there must be innovative, well-designed housing out there. I just can't seem to find it!" —Tracey R., from the Dwell discussion board
