2013_12_SACAPULCOJPG_-1_4The challenge of reinterpreting a tried and true design lies in offering up something original, and Brooklyn-based, Mexican multi-disciplinary design studio NODO has done just that with their version of the winsome Acapulco Chair. A bohemian-happy patio chair that emerged in the 50s in the Mexican resort city after which it’s named, the Acapulco Chair’s 21st century renaissance has resulted in a slew of comely variations on the steel frame and monochromatic vinyl straps that comprised the original.

NODO’s version presents a more angular frame and trades in single-color vinyl for a gradient of vivid colors realized in cotton thread. The rationale: “The substitution of multicolored cotton threads for the traditional monochromatic vinyl thread enhances the radial effect, renewing the powerful visual quality of an otherwise simple geometric statement.” A statement which, no doubt, makes this Acapulco Chair less amenable to outside elementsbut when something looks this pretty, we’d be inclined to keep its vibrant good looks tucked away safely, anyway.
