Confetti-Duo-Slider1-1At the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) this month, Mid-Century design buffs familiar with the many variations of Sputnikthe starburst-like pendant light that came of age during America’s Space Racewill have stopped at least twice to view the lighting models presented by Avram Rusu Studio.

The New York design studio, founded by Romanian-born architect Andreea Avram Rusu, presented a sparkling booth adorned with pieces from the Confetti lighting collection, a series of pendant lights with glass and/or metal elements that clearly channeled the Sputnik’s retro dazzle while remaining very much a present-day confection.

Mimicking “an exuberant explosion of confetti,” the series standout is the richly detailed Confetti Glass Pendant, a ravishing composition of colorful, lustrous hand-blown glass discs and metallic accents that’s anything but minimal, but not one bit over-the-top. Even to die-hard modernists, sometimes more is best.aarConfetti2_Confetti-Duo-Slider1
