Michael McDaniel, the mind behind the Reaction Housing System recently contacted me for a sneak peek of his first full scale and functional rapid response emergency housing systems named The Exo. At first glance these slick futuristic “pods” reminded me of a forward thinking cabin or tent or some type of cool small structure. For me, I really didn’t think “Emergency Housing System”. Maybe I never gave it any thought in the past because I haven’t been one of those unfortunate people that had been displaced by a natural disaster or other devastating event. I am thoroughly impressed at the dedication that Michael has shown with the development, design and production of The Exo. Make sure to click “READ MORE” to see a overview video and learn more about these amazing life changing structures.

“I am obsessed with creating design that matters. Reaction may be my little passion project from Texas, but I believe it will truly help others. That is why I am so driven on making it real.”

The interior and exterior skins are made from a composite called Tegris, aka “poor man’s carbon fiber”, which is made by Milliken. It is a cool material that is super light weight, recyclable, and incredibly strong. It is actually being used to armor vehicles for the military now and as air dams for NASCAR.

With the Reaction Exo units, the Tegris skins are placed over an aluminum super structure and filled with expanding closed cell foam to form a super durable shell that is only 400lbs complete with doors and bunks. The computer models estimate that each Exo shell has an insulation value of around R-21.

The separate floor plate is a steel frame with birch flooring that swings open like barn doors to accept ballast for anchoring the units down. A floor plate’s expanded metal ballast tray can hold over 1600 lbs of sandbags, loose sand, or rubble. The Exos retail for $4800 each if configured like these prototypes with a 90 day lead time from our factory in Bassett, Virginia.
