Finnish designer Mari Isopahkala’s Viikari pendant light was a notable hit during this year’s Salone Satellite, a showcase for the most talented young designers from around the globe that coincides with Milan Design Week. And one look at these images explains why. Part of a series of linear wood lighting designs that the Helsinki-based Isopahkala has created since 2012, Viikari is the first ceiling light in the collection, and easily the most beautiful. An abstract composition comprised of pale birch wood and touches of Mondrian-esque color, Viikari is both light fixture and art, sculpture and mobile—somehow managing to project exuberance alongside Finland’s famous restraint.
