Who says old-style pizzerias can’t have contemporary visual flair? Not Sergio Mannino Studio, which set out to add a slice of pizzazz to a traditional New York City pizzeria located on a prime stretch of Greenwich Village’s Bleecker Street. Susanna presents a clean-lined, sleek version of the no-frills pizza joint without forsaking requisite materials, like wood, ceramic and exposed brick.

Beginning with the lighting—Sergio Mannino Studio has wisely traded in harsh flourescent lighting for diffused pendant lights indoors, and candlelight for the adjoining outdoor garden—and custom built, plain wood tables paired with glossy white chairs, Susanna’s ambiance is clean-lined and refreshingly pleasing without overreaching.

The open kitchen remains a central feature, but a simple wooden counter and pared-down white stools create an inviting spot for chomping on a slice or two. The primary facing walls of the long, narrow space—one, exposed brick, painted white and decorated with site-specific art; the other comprised of red-and-white tiles, echoing traditional checkerboard tablecloths—are particularly imaginative touches.
