Pantone, the global authority on color trends, announced that today, for the first time in their history, they were naming TWO colors as Color of the year! The Colors of the Year are Rose Quartz, a shade of blush pink and Serenity, a calming blue. Interior, graphic and fashion designers (and just about anyone in the design field) wait with baited breath for Pantone’s Color of the Year announcement every year. Pantone expects that its Color(s) of the Year will become the definitive color signature for the year, so a lot goes into the decision of which hue will be chosen. Both shades have been seen in various spring 2016 fashion collections, and fashion color trends tend to dictate what will become popular in interiors. According to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Institute, they wanted "compassion, which today a lot of people are looking for." She says the colors induce "feelings of stability, constancy, comfort and relaxation," and that they "create balance in a chaotic world." Both Rose Quartz and Serenity can be incorporated into your interiors in a myriad of ways: Although the hues may at first have you thinking of babies and nurseries, that was not Pantone's intent when deciding on the colors. According to Eiseman, the main aim of the selection is warmth and tranquility. Rose Quartz is a warmer color than Serenity and is like a "serene sunset, flushed cheek or budding flower." The cool blue of Serenity is meant to provide a calming effect and bring "a feeling of respite even in turbulent times...Serenity provides us with a naturally connected sense of space." If you decide on painting your walls with one of these colors, consider the different characteristics of the colors and how you want the finished product to feel. Both hues can act as neutrals in a space and are great for softening the impact of brighter, more intense colors. You can bring in similar shades of pink or blue in small or large doses. You can bring the colors into your space with upholstered pieces, like a streamlined sofa or unique accent chair. If the thought of painting your walls or investing in upholstered furniture in these colors brings on feelings of commitment-phobia, lighting and accessories are the perfect way to incorporate the hues into your space. Add decorative pillows in interesting textures or look for pillows with similar shades of pink and blue incorporated into a pattern. Both physical and visual texture will keep your pillow arrangement from looking flat. Rugs are also  an excellent way to bring color into a room as an accent. Place blue table lamps that are similar in tone to Serenity on an accent or console table to bring a light and airy feel to a room. A quick way to incorporate Pantone's Colors of the Year is with colored lamp shades. How do you feel about Pantone's selection of Rose Quartz and Serenity? Do you think you'll incorporate them into your interiors?  We want to know your thoughts, so leave your comments below!
