While we all might dream of a mansion or a huge house on a hill overlooking the ocean, the reality of our abodes is usually something much more humble. No matter how lofty our goals might be, while we’re working on achieving them we’re likely stuck living in a small apartment or home for the time being.
Making do with a small space presents many challenges. These homes often come with cramped living spaces, tiny kitchens, and miniscule closets that are the bane of every fashionista’s existence. It might be easy to throw one’s hands up and decide that there’s just so working around these problems of space, but we don’t give up that easily.
If you approach your small space as an opportunity, instead of an obstacle, miracles can happen. Review some of our tips on how your teeny tiny apartment can make a big impact.
1. All You Need Are Some Shelves
One of the biggest problems with small apartments is the lack of storage. Whether it’s missing cupboards in the kitchen, the lack of a cabinet in the bathroom, or a nook masquerading as a closet you’re going to run into storage problems. That’s where shelves come in.
Consider adding a metal, industrial style storage shelf to your kitchen. The minimal design of these types of shelves mimics a restaurant kitchen and provides almost as much storage space as you’d get with a pantry. Use cute boxes or antique tins to store smaller items so they don’t fall through the slats.
Floating shelves on your walls will be a life saver. You can use these anywhere and they’re great for storing books or photos in the living room or makeup and toiletry items in the bathroom. You can even screw small hooks in the sides for hanging items like brushes or a hair dryer.
2. Make your Bed Space Count
One of the biggest challenges you’re likely to run into when assessing a small apartment is the bed. Beds are big and there’s not always an ideal place to put them in a tiny space. However, before you throw your hands in the air and settle on a futon or a pull out couch, remember that your bed is one of the most important things in your life and it does not deserve a rash decision.
A double or queen size bed doesn’t have to take up your entire space if you approach the situation correctly. A bed stand with built in shelves to replace your dresser can work perfectly in a small space and save you some clutter in the process. Of course you’ll want to be sure that you have the best quality mattress that you can. Consider saving money on an expensive style of bed by purchasing a more reasonably priced adjustable bed. If you have to sleep in a small room at least you’ll do so in utter and complete bliss.
3. Divide and Conquer
One clever and ingenious way to maximize your small space is with room dividers. While it can be terribly easy to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on hand carved rosewood dividers with cherubs and leaves, chances are that if you had that kind of money you wouldn’t be living in a little apartment.
Depending on your personal design aesthetic, you have a number of choices in creative room dividers. Heavy fabric drapes make excellent room dividers and evoke a feeling of luxury. A floor to ceiling set of shelves can not only separate spaces but give you additional storage as well. If you or someone you know is handy with a power saw and a screwdriver you could build a three-paneled divider and cover it with canvas. This gives you the perfect opportunity to create your own work of art that will also keep your dinner guests from gazing upon your laundry hamper in between courses.
At some point in our lives most of us will need to suck it up and make do with a small space while we’re working for bigger and better things. However, there’s no reason that we have to let these small spaces be anything but fabulous. Unleash your creativity, shop for furniture wisely, and make sure that you harness your inner neat-freak to keep things from getting out of hand.
Once you’ve managed all of those things you can sit back, enjoy your small, but elegant, space, and dream of that house on the hill.
