Artek_Karuselli_JPGFinnish furniture designer Yrjö Kukkapuro may not be quite the household name as his countrymen Alvar Aalto and Eero Aarnio, but his sumptuously sized, futuristic Karuselli Lounge Chair, designed in 1964, is plenty familiar to keen observers of Mid Century design. Kukkapuro remains a principle designer for furniture brand Avarte, which still manufacturers the Karuselli Lounge Chair, but in observance of the chair’s 50th anniversary, Artek has released a brand new edition of both the lounge chair and its matching ottoman.

Debuting at IMM Cologne recently, Artek’s Karuselli Lounge Chair, with it’s deep and roomy fiberglass shell, soft leather upholstery, and swivel motion, is a reminder of Kukkapuro’s preoccupation with ergonomics decades before the term became fashionable. “Does it make any sense to design a chair which is not good to sit on?,” Kukkapuro has been quoted as saying. No, but, then, not all great designers are quite so sensible.Artek_Karuselli_Red_TW003_Vitra_Prismatic_JPGArtek_Karuselli_Red_White_JPGArtek_Karuselli_Ottoman_Red_White_JPGArtek_Karuselli_Vitra_Prismatic_group_JPGArtek_Karuselli_Ottoman_White_White_JPG
