clickOutdoor illumination has been given a particularly pretty boost by Hong Kong designer Terry Chow’s LED-illuminated NI outdoor umbrella. Marketed under Chow’s Foxcat brand label, NI, which has already garnered several design awards, including a 2014 Red Dot distinction, is geared towards the luxury hospitality industry—which is just as well, given its decidedly luxurious price tag (upwards of $4,000).

But Chow and his collaborators at Foxcat have hit upon something irresistible with their “parasol and garden torch,” an ordinary-looking outdoor umbrella which turns into a glowing wonder when its 3-channel lighting panel and proprietary “finger-sensing one-touch dimmer” are activated. Though it burns brightly, a single parasol’s LED-powered system consumes the energy of a trio of 60W incandescent light bulbs, and generates a minimal amount of heat. To boot, NI continues to illuminate even when closed, shrinking its footprint considerably, but losing none of its nighttime magic.
