New Yorkers longing for a dog that doesn’t need to be walked will want to mark their calendars for the Gerald and James project, on view during New York Design Week in May. An impressive collaborative art installation spearheaded by the UK design firm Lazerian, the Gerald and James project began with a free-standing model of a dog—a Bracco Italiano breed, nicknamed Gerald—fashioned from 88 individual paper components. Models of the sculpture were shipped to artists’ studios in Europe, USA, Australia, Argentina, Seoul Korea and New Zealand, with the only instruction being for the artists to put their own distinctive markings on the dog. The project’s completion will be celebrated during New York Design Week with an installation of each Gerald submitted; a limited edition, large format book created by the bespoke UK paper mill James Cropper; and a kit with instructions for anyone interested in making their own Gerald at home.
