Designing with ecological and social responsibility in mind is one of those lofty goals rarely adopted by creators of sleek modern objects. But the Berlin-based home accessories company Roomsafari has made its central philosophy just that—and has admirably managed to keep its eye on the prize since its inception in 2001.

Roomsafari founders Christine Nogtev and Chul Cheong, who’ve managed to also rack up quite a few design awards along the way, ensure that all their creations are sourced and made with local materials, and, incredibly, are manufactured in Berlin by a single production partner: Vfj Werkstätten Berlin, a workshop for disabled people. “This special kind of manufacturing influences the way we create and design products,” say Nogtev and Cheong, adding that their goal remains to use as little material as possible in creating “simple, pure design.”

Roomsafari’s 2009 Lucky Clover umbrella stand is one of those simple, pure (and great fun, we might add) designs, with an airy four-leaf clover umbrella holder stabilized by a solid concrete base. Good luck, we say, to anyone trying to find a happier spot for their umbrellas!
