Designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, one of busiest design teams anywhere, have somehow found time to release a new book of illustrations and photography which catalogues their diverse range of completed projects over the last four years. Entitled One on One, the book aims, according to the designers, to shed light on the creative process behind the work of Barber Osgerby, their award-winning, London-based design studio.

Already winners of the Panarei London Design Medal at this year’s London Design Festival, “the highest accolade bestowed upon an individual who has distinguished themselves within the industry and demonstrated consistent design excellence over a number of years,” Barber and Osgerby launched One on One at the festival this past week, giving scores of attendees a chance to flip through the pages of their book while sitting comfortably on the sumptuous sofa collection they designed for Knoll last year.

The book’s title, One on One references both the singularity of each designer’s creative approach—despite a collaborative output which dates back to their days in design school—and the individualized attention with which each project is tackled. “No matter how many projects we have underway, each project is considered and developed one by one.”

One on One features little text, but focuses instead on tight, gorgeous little line drawings and graphic illustrations of Barber Osgerby products, some immediately recognizable, others vivid abstractions. Rendered in various media—pencil, watercolor, collage—each composition features stylized, mostly monochromatic shapes, all accorded generous expanses of white space in spare two-page spreads. The designers explain, “Each project starts in its own unique way. Sometimes, it’s a quick line drawing in a sketchbook, usually when navigating the direction of a project; at other times a more refined watercolor or collage when resolving the form of an object.”
