I am a huge fan of DUNN and now they have gone and made some amazingly beautiful modern lighting fixtures. I love the look of several of these long stretching forms crossing each other creating a pattern or community of light. The possibilities and configurations with these pieces are pretty endless. Brass is such a nice compliment to a filament bulb!
Asher Dunn, founder of Studio DUNN, challenged himself to integrate the organic with the industrial when developing this product. The promising young designer – who lives and works in the Ocean State – turned to sea life for his inspiration, appropriately enough. “I was fascinated by images of kelp taken from below the surface of the water,” says Dunn. “Watching the dramatic quality of light shining through the plant, my mind made a link between the natural characteristics of the kelp and its appropriateness as inspiration for a lighting piece.”
“Seeing the thin, stretching blades and beaded joints of the seaweed mirrored in the dynamic, lanky design of the Sorenthia, the connection between the two is obvious. The brass and steel components of the light fixture were chosen not only for their strength, but because they bring the organic quality of the design to an industrial realm. The result is a piece with a natural, flowing grace, but also a distinct, hard edginess. “There is an abruptness to the juxtaposition of the industrial and the organic that is peculiar and striking about this piece,” says Dunn. “The combination catches you off guard, but also exudes an inherent elegance.”
