A facility for kids is so often confused with bold primary colors, a cacophony of visual clutter, and pattern making as adults impose their own vision of a childlike environment. But, this is not at all the case with the new Charlottesville Boys and Girls Club, designed by SMBW Architects. This is a masterful exercise in restraint, simplicity, and modern authenticity. The building design lifts children up to a level of maturity rather than panders to their youth by providing a neutral background upon which they may discover their own sense of self in an ordered, and well choreographed series of indoor and outdoor spaces filled with natural light.
