I know it has been a while since the last “Method Behind” but I am trying to get these features back on track. In the past I have generally featured furniture makers but I now want to open these features up to artists, interior designers and architects. If you are interested in being featured just drop me an email tyler(at)plastolux(dot)com.

Today we meet Curtis Micklish, I instantly started to salivate when I laid eyes on his Belomo sideboard, a custom piece that to me, is really outside the box or in this case a box inside a box.

Q: Who is?

micklish is a design and build furniture shop in San Diego, California. I design and make a variety of objects for the home and I seem to be always looking in a new direction to keep things interesting.

Q: What is your background?

Since I could walk, I think I was working on some kind of project with my dad. Thinking back now, I probably passed up some serious play time, but I guess making things has always felt like a good time. The process of taking an idea through design and then making it with you own hands is very fulfilling and having the ability to move around and do different things keeps it interesting.

Q: What inspires you and influences your design choices?

Simple shapes and forms seem to give me the most inspiration to create new objects. I tend to combine this with a want or need of my own to create something new.

Q: What is your preferred material to work with? Are there any materials that you would like to incorporate into future designs?

I really enjoy mixing wood and steel. I think they complement each other and it also allows me to switch things up and do something a little different. The more tools I get to work with the better. I have been working on a new table design and I am looking to incorporate ceramic into the piece which will be a first for me. It will be a subtle addition to the wood top and I’m excited to get working on it.

Q: What trends are you seeing in furniture design, good and bad?

One of the things I have noticed, and maybe it’s not on a large scale, but I think some people are beginning to put more value in those select pieces they choose to have in their home. Pieces that the next generation would want to have. In turn, there is more handcrafted work available and more solid wood construction that will stick around for a few generations.
