A show-stopper, by any definition, this past week at ICFF, was the Cloud chandelier by New York design studio Apparatus. The duo behind ApparatusGabriel Hendifar and Jeremy Andersonhave managed to parlay their love of vintage details (“aged brass, etched glass, leather, and porcelain”) into a spanking new range of lighting designs that bear the kind of burnished richness typically reserved for things that have been around for a while. Patinated brass, milky porcelain, and frosted glass aren’t a recipe for glitter and sparkle so much as moody elegance—of which Cloud XL, the largest of the Cloud lighting series, has plenty. A cluster of 73 hand-frosted glass orbs, spanning a width of 50 inches, may be the ingredients for an attention-getting design, owing to size alone; but by adding compositional purity and seemingly impossible visual lightness to the recipe, Apparatus has managed that modern day rarity: yes, a show-stopper.CLOUD-IN-SITU-2CLOUD-IN-SITUAPPARATUS-STUDIO-CLOUD-XL-IN-SITU-B-1134x638-1
