ICFF is long over (check out all the posts here), but there’s one issue that seems to never get resolved. Modern furniture is usually gorgeous to look at, but is it always comfortable? Whether it’s a strange material or an odd design, some modern furniture just doesn’t look comfy at all. We devised a rating system and took it to this year’s ICFF to see how many new designs would pass muster!

We may love modern furniture, but we definitely treasure comfort. That’s why we enlisted the help of 2Modern friend and furniture maker Michael Yates. His background and expertise made him the perfect guy to rate chairs based on firmness, quality, comfort and ergonomics. This isn’t exactly science, but we’ll be bringing you a series of posts to tackle the very important question of looks versus comfort!

Today we start with: the Achilles Chair by Zipperer Studio. In Michael’s words: The Achilles Chair by Zipperer Studio is great. Has classic proportions and feels good on the lean, as you can imagine.

Our ratings system, which we admit is based a lot on personal preference, gave the Achilles Chair 4 stars for firmness (meaning it’s pretty firm but had a little give), 4 stars for touch (the materials felt good to the hands), 4 stars for construction (it felt sufficiently sturdy and looks like it was made pretty well) and 4 stars for ergonomics (Michael looks like he fits nicely in there, doesn’t he?). Read more about it here.

You’ll have to stay tuned to the blog to see what other new designs he rates for comfort; which chair will be the most comfortable?! What do you think about the Achilles Chair by Zipperer Studio? Does it look as comfy as it does attractive? Do you think you would enjoy sitting in it? Let us know!
