Brendan Ravenhill has an amazing collection of modern industrial lighting fixtures with some other great pieces of furniture sprinkled throughout his body of work. His Cord Lamp, an evolutionary descendant of Jean Prouve’s Swing Jib Lamp is a pretty killer tweak on a iconic industrial fixture. The Bare Light in it’s translucent simplicity is stunning, a grouping of those would be so nice. Read more about Brendan after the jump.

Q: Who is?

I’m a Los Angeles based industrial designer specializing in objects, lighting and furniture. I also recently completed an interior design rennovation for the Los Angeles restaurant Osteria La Buca.

Q: What is your background?

I come from a strong craft background. After graduating college with a sculpture degree I spent the next seven years learning various trades. These included stints as a carpenter, fisherman, timber framer, boat builder and metal worker before returning to graduate school to study design. My process is very physical and my designs respond directly to material properties or manufacturing methods.

Q: What inspires/drives you?

I find my greatest inspiration in utilitarian objects and buildings such as tools, wooden boats and barns. I also am very influenced by the work of mid century designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, Jean Prouve and Friso Kramer.

Q: What is your preferred material or style to work with?

I have the greatest familiarity with wood, and use it regularly both in my work and for prototyping purposes. Right now though I’m really into cast aluminum and am working on a series of tables utilizing cast components.

Q: What trends are you seeing in furniture design, good or bad

The simple stripped down aesthetic and industrial feel of the last couple years has been giving way to a new wave of sumptuous couches and padded chairs. I don’t place a good or bad value on this change but am intrigued by how consumer confidence in the economy affects the design of objects. More luxurious materials and finishes make me believe that designers are optimistic that we’ve turned the corner. Either that or the richest 10% are the only people still buying.
