0255_2puder_02-1Not content to be upstaged by Nordic cousins Stockholm and Helsinki, Reykjavik is carving out a design niche of its own, having recently hosted the 6th installment of Design March, Iceland’s largest cultural showcase for local talent and a roster of international designers. Notable this year was first-time participant Greenland, an autonomous country with deep Nordic roots but a miniscule global profile commensurate with its remote location and low population density.

Inuk Design, a design label founded by Greenlandic graphic designer Liss Stender, presented a range of housewares defined by simple black-and-white iconography based on native Inuit motifs. Bedding, tableware, and decorative objects bearing stylized human and wildlife illustrations made for a charming, if modest, suite of items, distinguished for their whimsy and clean graphic flair. And just enough intrigue to make us want to see more.
