A conversation that I have with clients on a regular basis is whether to have open shelving or not have open shelving in their modern kitchen design. Stylish open shelving is not for everyone and I constantly preach that. BUT it is a beautiful, light and airy detail that can make a kitchen feel more modern and updated. Yes, you do have to keep the shelves tidy and dust free and yes, you only will want to display your most favorite items. But if you are willing, adding open shelving will create a look that even your guests will gasp with delight! The open shelving can also help make room for creating a designer look with modern hanging light fixtures . Above we see rustic wood shelves displayed on subway tiles in this image from House & Home. The mixture of both give a modern industrial approach to this kitchen. To create a streamlined look, use stainless steel shelving like in this kitchen image above from Bolig. They are really easy to clean but make sure they stay smudge free. White accessories look fantastic on stainless! Another lovely option for open shelving is to use simple white shelves like this idea above from A Cut of Joe. Everything that you display against the white will pop. It also allows you to mix and match different colors, styles and materials. These shelves in this image from Styles Decor look much more edited compared to the other three choices because they are custom and built to match the kitchen. This is the perfect option if you want to a more put together look in your kitchen space. What are your thoughts concerning open shelving? Yay or nay?
