03_Bombay-Laverstoke-MillA pair of glass greenhouses mark the entry to the stunning transformation of a 300 year old paper mill on the southern coast of England into a ravishing sustainable gin distillery. The work of Britain’s Thomas Heatherwick Studio, the refurbishment of Laverstock Mill from a derelict site to Bombay Sapphire’s new distillery, is both an architectural and ecological wonder, residing on the River Test in Hampshire County, amidst a conservation area and wetlands rich in both natural beauty and a slew of native species.

Heatherwick Studio took extraordinary care to preserve the surrounding habitat during the construction process—temporary re-homing of species, propagation of aquatic plants to further biodiversity, the installation of devices to encourage repopulation—and to install measures that stem environmental impact, including the use of distillation byproducts as a fuel source, the repurposing of materials from demolished buildings, and rainwater harvesting.

Already feted with a BREEAM Award for Industrial Award, a designation that recognizes adherence to environmentally sustainable practices, the refurbished brick structures that comprise the Laverstock Mill complex have been given a contemporary jolt with the addition of two looping glass volumes, a pair of greenhouses which ingeniously leverage the heat emitted from the distillation process to foster the growth of the botanicals essential to Bombay Sapphire’s famous gin. Intoxicating stuff.06_Bombay-Laverstoke-Mill07_Bombay-Laverstoke-Mill-105_Bombay-Laverstoke-Mill08_Bombay-Laverstoke-Mill07_Bombay-Laverstoke-Mill04_Bombay-Laverstoke-Mill
