We’ve got a particular spot in our heart for exteriors of homes that don’t look like everything else. It’s not that we aim to buck tradition, it’s just exciting to see what architects can come up with that is different, but still evokes a feeling of home. Different materials than the usual can certainly do it, but so can odd shapes, as in the Hill House by Johnston Marklee & Associates. We love how the exterior of this house just doesn’t really give up the secrets of the interior. It’s like you’re forced to study and view the exterior on its own merits. And though it’s bathed in all white, it still forces you to take notice because that white is in stark contrast to the greenery around it. And of course, that odd shape; it’s uplifting and foreboding, all at once, don’t you think? The way it interacts with the landscape is almost like hugging it and lifting an arm up; it’s like the silent white citadel is stretching itself into a yoga pose, and giving its inhabitants inside most lovely views.
