Glidehouse™

The Glidehouse™ modular home is a modern home designed for clean, simple living in collaboration with nature. It offers an affordable, low-maintenance, well-designed green housing alternative. This home debuted at Sunset Magazine's Celebration Weekend in May 2004, and featured in the August 2004 issue of Sunset. As MKD's first and most cost-effective design, several Glidehouses are already "in the ground," and MKD is currently in contract with several dozen customers to design and build their Glidehouse in the coming year.

Sunset® Breezehouse™

The Sunset Breezehouse™ modular home is a modern home designed with Sunset Magazine for indoor-outdoor living. This eco-friendly home blurs the boundary between interior and exterior space through a series of courtyards and private gardens. The signature design element is the Breezespace, the great room that distinguishes this design from the Glideshouse floor plans. This home debuted at Sunset Magazine's Celebration Weekend May 21-22, 2005 in Menlo Park, CA, and is featured in the August 2005 issue of Sunset. The Sunset Breezehouse, and its companion Side Breeze design, is MKD's most popular modern modular home.

mkSolaire™

The mkSolaire™ modular home, MKD's newest product line, is an open, spacious, loft-like home designed to offer healthy living in the city. This is a perfect design for an urban-infill lot, or for any site where a family can enjoy a light/loft-like feeling in their home. This 2- or 3-story design works well for narrow lots, and is also particularly suited to multi-family developments where walls are shared and costs are reduced.

mkLotus™

The mkLotus™ is the latest design by Michelle Kaufmann Designs. This beautiful, healthy home is a peaceful oasis that collaborates with the land. This home offers the latest high-performance systems and sustainable materials and methods, which dramatically reduces its impact on the environment, as well as your energy bills. This home is built utilizing off-site modular technology by XtremeHomes™, and is sponsored by West Coast Green, and Sunset® Magazine.

Custom Kaufmann Designs™

Custom Kaufmann Designs™ are modern modular buildings that customize the design to a client's particular site, living preferences or budget. Using many of the same design elements from the Glidehouse, Sunset Breezehouse and mkSolaire modular homes, a custom design for a single home, a whole community of homes or even a commercial structure can be built in a modular factory to your exact design specification. MKD specializes in modern design for modular construction.

Pricing and Process

All Michelle Kaufmann Designs are built in the modular factory nearest you and transported to your site. Pricing and the building process and time line will vary slightly by product line and the factory that will build your home. Michelle Kaufmann Designs wants to make sure from the beginning that the home you build with Michelle is exactly what you want and fits your budget.

An MKD Home can be built on just about any lot that a similarly designed and traditionally site-built home can be. A map of current and completed MKD projects is at here. We are now taking orders for MKD Homes, and can hand you the keys for your MKD Home in as little as eight months on standard floor plans.

Open Houses

The Breezehouse, which debuted at Sunset in May 2005 and is the only one completed to date, is no longer open to the public. Similarly, the Glidehouse, which debuted at Sunset Celebration Weekend May 2004, is no longer open. As with all MKD homes, both are private residences, and the owners want to simply live in them.

We work with all MKD home owners to open their homes for tours once they are completed. We will announce on LiveModern the availability of the next MKD Home to be shown for prospective buyers. Note that all MKD homes are private residences, and while we are working with owners to show their homes we also respect the owner's privacy (we won't even divulge their address so that you can drive by). You will appreciate the same consideration when you build your MKD home.
