I recently discovered this very affordable prefab house on Gizmag from North Wales author, Adam Williams. I found the house to be attractive and livable, with a story very much worth sharing.

Overview: a Vietnam-based firm Vo Trong Nghia Architects recently revealed an affordable prefabricated prototype house to potentially offer Vietnamese people on low incomes a safe and dependable dwelling. While still a work-in-progress and thus subject to change, the S House model prefab house costs just 4000 USD to build at current exchange rates.

Vo Trong Nghia Architects Reports on S-House 2 Project

“Despite rapidly growing economy in Vietnam, many families are still living in very poor conditions in Mekong Delta. Many structures are damaged because of land subsidence and the intolerantly harsh tropical weather.

“With the given situation, the aim of the project is to provide stable but lightweight, permanent but affordable homes for low-income dwellers.

The firm reports the first phase of this project started in 2012. A steel frame prototype was first used, but since 2013, a new prototype with precast concrete frame was used.

Prefabrication helps control quality and cost, and future mass production. Precast concrete frame and foundation guarantee predetermined stability and accuracy. The lightweight structure allows smaller foundation and transportability by small boats, since waterways are still the dominant transportation in Mekong Delta.

Founded in 2006, Vo Trong Nghia Architects is an architectural practice in Vietnam, with offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. By experimenting with light, wind and water, and by using natural and local materials, the firm employs a contemporary design vocabulary to explore new ways to create green architecture for the 21st century, whilst maintaining the essence of Asian architectural expression.
