Renting a home instead of buying can prevent you from living as greenly as you would like to. You’re unlikely to be able to do big things, like install solar panels, replace the boiler or insulate the house. But there are still plenty of things you can do as a tenant to help make the world a better place. You may not be able to make any huge adjustments, but sometimes it’s the little things that count. Being a tenant shouldn’t stop you from making responsible purchases and decisions. There’s a lot you can do, from limiting your energy consumption to producing some of your own food.

Energy Consumption

There are several ways you can limit your energy consumption in a rental home. You probably already do all the basics, like switching off lights and putting on a sweater instead of turning the heating up. As well as these, you can make sure you turn off gadgets and appliances when they’re not in use (don’t leave them on standby). You can also make some more permanent changes to your energy consumption. Start with switching to energy efficient light bulbs. Living in a rental home won’t necessarily prevent you from switching energy provider. Check to see if there’s a company more sustainable than your current one.

Recycle

Perhaps you already sort your waste into different containers for recycling, from glass to cardboard and plastic. However, you can go further and try to recycle as much as you possibly can. Rather than throwing some things in the recycling, you might be able to reuse them yourself. If you have a garden or pets, you can reuse food waste as compost or rabbit food.

Live Somewhere Small

If you’re trying to live greener and you’re looking to move, consider a smaller property. When you look for somewhere smaller, estate agents in Falmouth would be happy to find you somewhere that’s just the right size. To go one step further, you can share with other people. That way you’re sharing appliances and other things in the house, so none of you need to buy as much for yourself.

Water Consumption

Limiting your water consumption is easy to do when you’re renting a home or room. Although you can install high-tech showers and toilets to help you save on water, that’s difficult to do when you have to go through the landlord. It’s easier to simply limit your water consumption by watching what you use. You can get gadgets that measure your water use in the shower, but it’s just as easy to cut down on how much time you spend in there. Only run washing machines and dishwashers when they’re full and think about reusing the water from your baths or showers on your plants.

Living an eco-friendly life as a renter is much more accessible than it seems at first. You don’t need to own your home to change the way you live and be conscious of how your life impacts the planet.
