How do I repair an area of the furnace that is thinning?

The side of my gas furnace next to the flames has started to thin and has holes in it, when the heat is on you can see the glow from the flames thru the metal siding and some of the flames come out of the holes in the metal.

Sounds like you have some rust taking over your furnace. My question would be how old is the unit and how did the rust start? If it’s over 14 years...
