We had a deck built and stained in 2010. A 2nd coat was applied in 2013. Is a sealer necessary?

We live in Connecticut where the winters and summers have been extreme in the last 5 years. We used Wolman water based stain & the water pools easily, but the deck boards now have minute cracks. Sherwin Williams, seller of the product, advised against using polyurethane. We would like to keep the damage from growing. Please advise.
