Have you considered the impact that smoking has on the environment? It may come as a surprise to many, but cigarette butts account for more than 30% of litter worldwide. In fact, during their 2015 International Coastal Cleanup alone, Ocean Conservancy collected over 2 million cigarette butts which added up to 750 tons of cigarette waste material being sent to landfill.
Estimates suggest that around 4 trillion cigarette butts are discarded as litter around the world each year, which can have an incredibly harmful impact on the environment, not least in the seas where leached microplastics and microfibers from cigarette ends can kill aquatic life.
To make matters worse, cigarette butts typically are manufactured using cellulose acetate, a plastic which does not degrade easily. As a result, these cigarette butts can hang around for more than a decade.
If you’re a smoker who is trying to quit, it’s worth considering e-cigarettes as an alternative. Not only do they represent a far less harmful alternative to tobacco, they also have the potential to help lessen the impact of smoking on the environment.
If you haven’t come across e-cigs before, these battery-operated devices simulate the look and feel of smoking tobacco, but without the same harmful impact on your health. They feature a glass tank, or cartridge in some cases, which contains a nicotine laced liquid. When heated by the battery, the liquid is vaporised delivering a realistic hit of vapour.
One major attraction to these devices, however, is that they can be re-used over and over again and produce little in the way of waste, certainly when viewed against tobacco cigarettes.
To really see an ecological benefit, however, it’s important to select an e-cig which is not a disposable device. For example, JAC Vapour’s e cigs or electronic cigarettes are available in a wide variety of styles and sizes, but the important thing is that they can all be refilled and recharged multiple times.
While it’s true that the rechargeable batteries they use will eventually need to be disposed of, there are recycling schemes set up to help users dispose of them correctly, helping to prevent needless landfill. Responsible e-cig companies, such as JAC Vapour, also take part in the Distributor Take Back scheme, financially contributing to the provision of WEEE collection facilities by local authorities.
If you, or someone you know, is currently thinking of quitting but don’t know where to start, e-cigarettes are an effective means of helping to improve your health while protecting the environment at the same time.
