It’s 2019, and the world is finally becoming more conscious of environmental matters. A number of companies are using biodegradable materials for their packaging, and many bars and restaurants are abolishing the use of plastic straws. While these things do help towards a more eco-friendly future, there are still a lot of steps you can take to contribute towards a more environmentally conscious lifestyle. From cutting down water use to watching your eating habits, here are some tips on how to live a more eco-friendly way of life.

Insulate your home

Insulated homes are much easier to keep warm, meaning there’s less need to use central heating or electric heaters which waste energy. When it’s hot, properties with good insulation are also more likely to stay cool without the need to use cooling fans. If you already own your own home, get a specialist out to check your insulation and decide whether you need to re-insulate the walls, floor, and ceilings. If you’re seeking a new rental property or looking to buy a home, consider living in a new build property. These type of properties such as those from RW Invest are naturally more eco-friendly, being known to save money and lower the occupant’s carbon footprint.

Cut out plastic

Plastic has become one of the biggest threats to our planet. Over 8 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans each year, killing 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals on an annual basis. Cutting down plastic use is one of the best ways you can contribute towards a more eco-friendly world, and it’s often a lot easier than you’d think. Simple ways to cut out plastic include taking a canvas bag when shopping, buying fruit and veg loose or in a paper bag, and using a reusable water bottle and coffee cup.

Change your cleaning products

A number of household cleaning products contain harmful chemicals that are bad for the environment, and repeated exposure to these products can not only harm the earth, but they can be bad for your health too. If you’re hoping to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle, looking for cleaning products that use more natural ingredients is a must. There are a lot of companies that produce greener cleaning products, or you could even make them yourself with the help of some common household ingredients such as vinegar, lemon juice and baking soda.

Watch what you eat

Did you know that the meat industry is harming our planet? Livestock farming contributes to land and water degradation, coral reef degeneration and deforestation. To put things into perspective, around 25 kilograms of grain and 15,000 litres of water is used to produce just one kilogram of beef. Being more conscious of what you’re eating and trying to cut down on meat is a good way to help the environment. Even if this just means going meat-free on one or two days of the week, or only eating meat in your evening meals, the less meat you consume, the better impact you will have on your carbon footprint.
